The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides
Pet Valu is now the title sponsor for the annual Walk for Dog Guides, happening May 28th in communities across Canada. This amazing event is entering its 32nd year and serves as one of the main fundraising vehicles for Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. “100% of the proceeds from the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides directly supports Canadians who have a medical or physical disability. Dog Guides are provided at no cost to eligible Canadians from coast to coast despite the fact they cost $25,000 to raise, train and place. With no government funding, Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides relies solely on donations and fundraising events such as the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides so that the Foundation can continue to fulfill its mission,” explains Merilyn DeFazio, the manager of Events for Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. Every Guide Dog is trained in one of six specialized programs: Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Service, Seizure Response, Autism Assistance and Diabetic Alert.
Dog Guides make a huge impact in the lives of Canadians, which is why Pet Valu Canada selected them as their national charitable partner in 2014, and since then has gone on to sponsor 40 teams across Canada. “Every time we meet a new team and hear their story, we are overwhelmed with the profound difference that dog guides make in the life of a Canadian with a disability,” explains Senior Marketing Manager for Pet Valu Canada, Kellie McCutcheon. Adding, “Our team and our customers are extraordinarily generous people, we are consistently so proud of the results of our instore donation programs, and we know the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides is going to be a huge success.”
In Communities across Canada
The Pet Valu team, including Paulmac’s Pets are lacing up their walking shoes and joining in on the fun! From hosting walks to partnering with their local Lions club, the Pet Valu team is determined to make 2017 one of the best walks ever, just in time for Canada’s 150th birthday!
“In 1985, the Walk started as a singular event in Oakville, ON with the goal of raising funds and awareness to provide life-changing Dog Guides to Canadians with a medical or physical disability. The Walk has since expanded to include more than 240 communities across Canada and has collectively raised over $14 million for Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides,” explains Merilyn.
“Supporting local communities is one of the key things Pet Valu and our family of stores stands for – we’re your local Pet Experts and our stores really love to contribute to the community,” explains Kellie. “The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides is a new way for us to give back, and we want to help make this the best year ever!”
Interested in joining? We’d love to have you! Merilyn has some advice to set you up for success, “Participating in the Walk is more fun when you are part of a team. We like to encourage walkers to ask friends, family, co-workers, and neighbours to join in on the fun! You can create a customized Walk page on the website, www.walkfordogguides.com, and set a fundraising goal. If you have long distance friends or family that you would like to approach for a donation, direct them to your fundraising page so they can donate online.”
